Let the Fun Begin!

This week the first Infosheets and Quizzes have been sent out (a copy of the first quiz can also be found under the ‘Quizzes’ tab).

The first Infosheet has it all – Spring festivals, Easter, April Fool’s Day, Walpurgisnacht, Dance into May and so much more.

Here is a copy of our favourite Spring-cake – the Lammkuchen (Lamb-cake)

Lammkuchen

What you’ll need:
• 100g butter (softened)
• 100g cornflour
• 100g sugar
• 100g self-raising flour
• 1 tsp vanilla essence
• 100g ground almonds or hazelnuts
• 3 eggs
• Sprinkle of salt
• Extra butter and icing sugar

Here’s how you do it:
Preheat the oven to 180˚C. Using an electric mixer beat together all the ingredients (except for the extra butter and icing sugar) until the mixture is smooth. Using the extra butter grease the cake tin and spoon in the mixture. Let the cake bake for 60-70 minutes (until a skewer comes out clean). Once it is ready, take the cake out of the oven, let it cool and remove it from the form. Place the cake onto a plate and dust it with icing sugar. You may wish to tie a colourful ribbon around the lamb’s neck.

Let’s talk about Leichhardt!

Last year our event had a large focus on Ludwig Leichhardt – one of the world’s most famous explorers and naturalists. In Australia he is well-known for his exploration of northern and central Australia.

Ludwig_Leichhardt2

Whilst our focus this year is on festivals, there will be a range of word lists and quizzes available on Education Perfect that are focused on Ludwig Leichhardt – these will be available to all participating schools. Your school doesn’t have access to Education Perfect? No problem! There will be a free trial version available! If you are interested in this or registration for the Oktoberfest for Teens 2014, contact Paula at paulahaygtb@gmail.com

This year’s theme is…….

Festivals!

Germans are known for their hard work, their punctuality and precision, but one thing they love even more is to get together with their friends, family and even the whole community and celebrate anything and everything! From a small village festival at your uncle’s farm to the world’s largest festival, the Munich Oktoberfest, Germany has it all!

German celebrations are about almost anything – the seasons…

Die Perfekte Brezel

Germany is famous for many things… high quality cars, solar energy, the black forest cherry cake, pork knuckle and of course Brezeln (pretzels)!

Brezel

The best thing about Brezeln is that they are delicious with (almost) anything! Whether they’re warm with butter on them, with a Weisswurst or covered in cheese – they’re delicious!

Here is a short video of the “Brezel-Meister” from King of Cakes, Wolfgang Kelke, showing you how to make the perfect Brezel!

Now that you’ve seen how to make the perfect pretzel, why not give it a go yourself?
A fun way to practice is using play-dough or, if you’re up for the challenge, you can try making your own Brezel-dough from one of the countless recipes on the internet!

Viel Spass 🙂

Die Weltmeister sind zu Hause!

What a week it has been!

The World Cup final on Monday morning had us all sitting at the edge of our seats just hoping for a goal by Germany! After approximately 110 minutes of game time it finally happened – Mario Götze scored the winning goal for Germany! After another 10 minutes the game was finally over and the celebrations started!!

After a hug from Angela Merkel the boys received their gold medals and were showered in gold confetti as they passed the trophy around the team.

Germany v Argentina: 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Final

After their celebrations in Brazil, the team headed back to Germany where the party properly started in Berlin with over half a million fans! There was dancing, singing and chanting and even German singer Helene Fischer made a surprise appearance with her latest hit ‘Atemlos durch die Nacht.’

The celebrations have been going on all week, as the German players have been making their way back to their home cities, and Germans all over the world show no sign of stopping the party any time soon!

Here is a link to just some of the best moments from the past week, showing just how crazy it has been!

We hope you have all been enjoying the World Cup as much as we have – now we can finally start to get back into a normal sleeping pattern without getting up for the 2am, 5am and 6am games!

Finale – wir kommen!!!

At 6am this morning German football fans around the world were proudly wearing their black-red-yellow outfits and watched the game against Brazil begin. 11 minutes into the game Thomas Müller scored the first goal of the quarter final, but what followed was nothing short of legendary.

Germany scored 4 goals within 7 minutes and with his goal in the 23rd minute, Miroslav Klose secured his place as the highest World Cup scorer of all times! At 36 years of age this is his 4th World Cup playing for Germany and we could not be more proud of him!

But the game wasn’t over yet….

Germany entered half-time with a 5-0 advantage and scored an additional 2 goals in the 69th and 79th minutes. Just before the end of the game (and probably because they were already celebrating!) Brazil managed to score a goal in the 90th minute, giving a final score of 7-1.

Not only has Germany secured their place in the World Cup finals, but have now scored 221 World Cup goals, moving ahead of Brazil to become the tournament’s highest ever scorers! If that wasn’t enough, no other team has ever scored 7 goals in the semi-finals of the World Cup!

Here are your Oktoberfest for Teens organisers celebrating after the 7-1 victory!

The game between the Netherlands and Argentina tomorrow morning at 6am will decide which of these two teams will battle against Germany in the finals on Monday at 5am!

Bis Bald and Deutschlaaaaaaaaand 🙂

How to… German Flag Nails!

With the Germany v France game only a few hours away, here is a little tutorial on how you can show your support by painting your nails!

All you need for this is black, red and yellow nailpolish (and lots of paper towels if you’re as messy as we are!). Make sure you don’t do this on or near any light coloured furniture – we did this on the floor and made sure it was all covered with several layers of newspaper!

Firstly, paint about half of your nails yellow, ensuring the tip is completely covered and let them dry.

Colour in 2/3 of your nails in red, leaving the 1/3rd of the tip yellow and again, let them dry.

Finally, cover the last third of the nail with black nailpolish, let the nails dry and then, using a Q-tip and some nailpolish remover, clean up any excess nailpolish from your fingers. This was our attempt:

World Cup Update!

Have you all been following the World Cup as avidly as we have?

At 2:00am this morning Germany played its final game in the group stage against the USA. We were all up watching from our couches under multiple blankets and with plenty of tea to keep us warm – and what a game it was!

If you haven’t been following the World Cup, here is what you’ve missed:

Germany has played three games against Portugal, Ghana and the USA. They won 4-0 against Portugal, drew 2-2 against Ghana and won 1-0 against the USA this morning. Thomas Müller has scored 4 goals so far (3 against Portugal and 1 against the USA), Mats Hummels has scored 1 goal (against Portugal), Mario Götze has scored 1 goal (against Ghana) and Miroslav Klose has scored 1 goal (against Ghana).

Something you may not know about Klose (aside from the fact that he is one of our all-time favourite players!) is that he, since his goal against Ghana, is the World Cup’s joint all-time top scorer. One more goal and Klose will be the World Cup’s all-time top scorer! Klose – wir drücken dir die Daumen (we’re crossing our fingers for you)!

 Image

So Germany has won two games and drew one, but what does this all mean? Well, after the group stage, 16 teams are sent back home (sadly, Australia is one of those 16), whilst the other 16 battle it out to win first place!

To watch Germany play against Algeria in the next round of the World Cup tune in to SBS at 6:00am on Tuesday the 1st of July!

For information on all of the teams, games, pictures and much more head to the FIFA World Cup website (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/).

Bis bald und schöne Ferien!

World Cup and More!

It’s been a month since Easter and we’ve been busy starting to come up with quizzes and other fun activities for this year’s Oktoberfest for Teens which will follow the theme of festivals. We’re looking forward to sharing the many traditional and modern festivals that we celebrate with you! But before any of that, there is something very exciting starting in just 17 days!

Even if you’re not a big football fan, the World Cup 2014 will be more competitive than ever! Our German boys started their training in the beautiful country side in South Tyrol. They had a training game against the German under 20s, but were able to win with a final score of 7:1 (even without superstars Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Marcel Schmelzer and Per Mertesacker playing in the training game).

If you’re interested in keeping up to date with how the team is going in preparation for the World Cup in Brazil, the DFB (Deutscher Fussball Bund) website posts the latest news and their facebook page is constantly updated with interviews, pictures and videos of the training.

We can’t wait to see you all in just a few short months!

Frohe Ostern!

It’s Easter time and in the Oktoberfest Brisbane families’ households this means chocolate, chocolate and more CHOCOLATE!!

Easter time in Germany generally marks the true beginning of spring and families often have the first chance of the year to spend time in their gardens or go for long walks and enjoy the fresh air without having to put on 5 layers of clothing! German families all have their Easter traditions – Easter-egg-hunting in the house and the garden, Easter nests (nests filled with chocolate and other Easter-themed gifts), Easter themed arts and crafts and a breakfast tradition of “Ostereier-ticken” where two hard-boiled eggs are hit against each other and the person’s egg which doesn’t break wins!

Our favourite traditions of Easter are definitely the Easter-egg hunt and the arts and craft! In Germany parents like to be particularly tricky when hiding their Easter eggs, sometimes hiding them so well that you’ll end up finding an Easter egg at Christmas time in the vintage coffee grinder (nice one mum!).

When it comes to Easter themed arts and crafts there really is no limit. One of the all-time favourite activities for all ages is decorating eggs – it can be a little bit tricky, but is definitely a lot of fun! You start by pricking two holes opposite each other in a raw egg, then using a toothpick you make the bottom hole 2-3mm in diameter and prick a hole into the egg yolk. Next, you blow on the top as hard as you can and all of the egg white and yolk should come out and let the empty egg shells dry out in the sun. Once they’ve dried out, the egg shells can be decorated in any way you like. To hang the eggs up, you attach a small piece of wood (such as part of a toothpick) onto the end of a piece of thread, push the wood into the larger hole in the egg shell and then lightly pull on the thread. A handy hint is to keep the egg containers – they’re great to put the egg shells in when drying and even better for storing your beautifully decorated eggs in until next year!easter_egg_decorating_ideas2

We hope you all have a lovely Easter break with your loved ones and most importantly, lots of chocolate!

Bis bald!
